Our Location

The Mackerel Islands are situated 22km offshore from the town of Onslow, 1400km north of Perth in Western Australia's spectacular Pilbara region. Accommodation is available on two islands — Thevenard Island and Direction Island. Thevenard Island is a C Class Nature Reserve and as well as providing accommodation for holidaymakers, it also accommodates an oil storage facility.

Getting there

Onslow can be reached by road — a comfortable day and a half from Perth — and island transfers are provided by boat.

Thevenard Island has a 1000m long brick paved airstrip, so air travel is another option. Norwest Airwork (08 9949 2888) offers a service to Thevenard Island from Onslow, Exmouth and Karratha. Should you require further information on the airstrip please contact the Island Managers on (08) 9184 6444.

Buses can take you from Perth to either the Onslow turnoff, Exmouth or Karratha (Greyhound 08 132 030). If you catch a bus to the Onslow turnoff, a taxi can take you from the turnoff into the town.

Qantas flies daily between Perth and Karratha (131 065) and Skywest flies daily between Perth and Learmonth (1300 660 088), which is situated just south of Exmouth.
