The festive season approaches at Thevenard Island What better time to be here at Thevenard Island with the warmer weather now upon us. The weather on Thevenard Island is sunny and warm, great for fishing out in the vast ocean or staying close to home for a casual beach or jetty fishing adventure. Lately there has been a cool breeze around in the afternoons making for some great exploring weather. The Mangrove Jack seem to be circling at the Jetty, and with the baby turtles due to start to hatch any day soon, surely one of them will jump onto my line soon! It’s almost 2 months since we arrived, and how the weeks change. It’s almost like its very own wildlife calendar here at Thevenard. The turtle tracks that are covering the beach right in front of the beach front cabins could be mistaken for tractor tyres, as they stretch from the ocean to the sand dunes in search of the perfect spot. This very special journey made once a year by the turtles here at the Mackerel Islands is definitely a fantastic tourist attraction here in the Pilbara. A real contrast from the mining and industry sector that is building on the mainland. Thevenard Island boasts 11kms of continuous beautiful beaches surrounding the island full of lots of interesting things for the beachcombing enthusiast. Don’t forget the wildlife, we have plenty of precious turtles creating nests for there eggs, resident birds and lizards. The first baby turtles are to be born around the Christmas period. We needed a rest from fishing today and so decided to lie in the sand, soak up some sun and enjoy a swim in the beautiful blue ocean. No mangrove jack today, but we’ll be back out there again tomorrow. It’s about time for us to finish for the day, and quite frankly I’m looking forward to sipping on a nice cold glass of wine this evening overlooking the beautiful blue at the front of one of the beach front cabins, maybe Art may even crank up the BBQ too!
