With the recent good weather, things are really hotting up at the Mackerel Islands, WA. A number of boats have taken advantage of this great weather and headed out further than usual, producing some great fishing action. The contours are literally teaming with schools of baitfish with the usual Pelagic (tuna, mackerel and GT's) out hunting in large numbers. A monster 40kg Mackerel was taken on a Halco diving lure, by one lucky angler.
A good amount of coral trout have been in the 6 - 8 kg range, caught on both live and dead baits this week, but the fusiliers are still producing the best results.
With the water temperature here at the Mackerel Islands sitting at around 22 - 24 oC, some big reds are starting to be seen in the 20 - 30 metre mark. A nice 12 kg red caught out on the Thevenard Island charter boat, Thevenard One, and some trout and cobia also on the scene made for some great stories from that day!
With word from Exmouth, WA, that some Sailfish had been spotted, the McAuliffe's ventured out to try their luck around Thevenard Island. Being located only 100km north of Exmouth and the Ningaloo Marine Park; you can safely say that if they are in Exmouth, you'd expect them to be seen here. A lucky day for the McAuliffe's with a 9ft sailfish landed, making them the sure and deserved winners of the Nedlands Seafari Group! With Tim McAuliffe and his crew travelling back to Perth today from their island holiday, they have promised a photo to follow on their return.
Let's hope this great weather continues, here in North West Australia!
