Mackerel Islands fishing report 30/6/2011

EthanDurrant16Jun11Winter fishing at the Mackerel Islands is really starting to heat up!! With the water temperature dropping to 20oC, pelagic action is at its best. The recent visit by the “OUR TOWN” crew showed Program Presenter, Gavin Pratt, why it’s called the Mackerel Islands! With a Laser Pro 190-2m Diver in the water for two minutes the results were indeed favourable with a 12kg Spaniard [pictured], a show Gav will never forget.

The catch was backed by some serious fun, jigging up some monster Golden Trevally on light spinning gear. The island’s charter vessel, Thevenard 1, has been taking advantage of the good weather. With Eddie Bullen’s group on board, heading out to the 50m mark produced a broad array of species including an 8kg Red Emperor, Coral Trout and some thumping Spanglies. Whilst dropping jigs, Mackerel to 15kg were hooked with numerous fish schooling under the boat.

GavMackerelOurTownFrequent visitor, Darryl Hitchen, a veteran to these waters, showed his group a great time, also boating some notable Mackies. The youngest angler on board, Ethan Durrant (9) landed some nice Spangled Emperor [pictured], and after heading out deep, Darryl hooked up to a huge Mahi Mahi. After a long fight with vigorous leaps, the fish was successfully boated.
