Not surprisingly, anglers will think they are in piscatorial heaven, with an incredible range of sport and game fishing on offer for prized species like spanish mackerel, cobia, sailfish and even marlin not too far from the island. Fishers looking for a feed will find plenty of options too, with popular targets like coral trout and red emperor widespread around the islands.
But there is much more than just fish to the waters around Direction Island, with breaching whales often putting on spectacular shows as they migrate. Turtles use the beaches for nesting, sea snakes sun themselves on the surface, and watchful osprey cruise the skies looking for their next feed.
If you’ve had enough diving, fishing and sightseeing, then just simply sit back and relax, maybe have a quick dip off your private sandy beach or enjoy one of the famous West Australian sunsets.

What to bring?
You will need to bring with you sufficient food to last your stay on Direction Island. Take your own fishing tackle and if you require any local knowledge on tackle the Mackerel Island staff at Thevenard Island will gladly assist.
The only other items you will need to bring are towels, tea-towels, and plenty of sun tan lotion.
The beach cabin is not air-conditioned so cool clothes are a must!
Boat owners should be aware that Direction Island requires a higher level of boating and outdoor skills. As the island is not staffed, the only contact with the Mackerel Islands is via a mobile phone. Your closest port of call is Onslow.
Inside the cabin
Bathroom
The newly renovated comfortable bathroom to the rear of the cabin includes a wc, shower and wash basin.
Outside
The cabin boasts a raised shaded balcony and BBQ area to sit and watch the world go by whilst waiting for the freshly caught fish to finish cooking on the BBQ, outside tables and chairs all within a few short metres from the waters edge.
Direction Island cabin sleeps 4 persons comfortably, but 6 persons if required.
